Mission statements

Founded in 2011, the Alexis de Tocqueville Project on Democratic Ideals and Institutions promotes scholarship and discourse in moral and political thought. Under the leadership of its director, Chris W. Surprenant, and with the guidance and support of its affiliated scholars and benefactors inthe legal, business, and medical community, the Tocqueville Project sponsors and guides research on issues in moral and political thought, holds public lectures on topics central to the study of democratic ideals and institutions, and organizes reading and discussion groups focusing on issues central to its mission. Among the central issues that the Tocqueville Project aims to address are: (1) the values of democratic society and their justification; (2) the moral basis of civil liberties, private property, & free enterprise; (3) the role of religion in a free society; (4) the nature of an individual's obligation to others and to the state; (5) the relationship among democracy, freedom, and equality; and (6) the role of the state in making individuals virtuous. The Tocqueville Project is funded entirely by contributions from private individuals and foundations. It does not accept state funds or money from political organizations.
