Dear Friend:
Since its post-Katrina inception, the Center for Public Service has continued to centralize and expand public service opportunities at Tulane University. Through its many programs, the Center supports Tulane students, faculty and community partners as they seek to merge academic inquiry with sustained civic engagement and directly contribute to the reconstruction and sustainability of NewOrleans.
As the city and the university continue to move toward renewal and growth, they also stand to gain unprecedented opportunities. New Orleans is coming back and the city is rebuilding smarter than before. Tulane has created a new undergraduate core curriculum. In fact, Tulane has become the first major research university in the country to have a public service requirement.
Tulane students, faculty and community partners are all excited about the institutional support that now backs public service programs and initiatives. The opportunity to engage in the community positively impacts students’ sense of civic and social responsibility, academic achievement, interpersonal development and ability to work in a context of diversity. The faculty teaching public service courses appreciate the real life experience and opportunities that their students gain when the community becomes their classroom; community partners appreciate the time and intellectual capital that Tulane contributes to their organizations.
Since the installment of the public service requirement there has been a substantial increase in interest in attending Tulane. In the last two years Tulane has received more than 38,000 applications for 1500 freshman placements each fall. Today we offer more than 250 service-learning courses and internship opportunities. Through those activities and others, the Tulane community has dedicated thousands of hours to public service each semester.
