Classrooms without walls. Civic engagement. Empowered communities. Today, these concepts go hand-in-hand with the undergraduate experience at Tulane University. And our very own Dr. Barbara E. Moely deserves recognition for introducing this pedagogy to the university. Twelve years ago, Dr. Moely founded the Office of Service Learning and sparked a movement to push the frontiers of teaching, research, and service by educating students to become creative and inspired leaders for the new millennium. As part of Tulane's reformation following Hurricane Katrina, the service learning office became the Center for Public Service as Tulane's outreach initiatives, community engagement, and partnership expanded.
It is therefore with great enthusiasm that we announce the renaming of one of our most prestigious faculty awards in honor of Dr. Moely. The Barbara E. Moely Service Learning Teaching Award will be presented annually by the Provost's Office to a professor who embraces Dr. Moely's exceptional dedication to bringing classroom lessons to life through engaged partnerships. The award is a reflection of Dr. Moely's decades-long devotion to bridging the university-community divide by training students across disciplines to become compassionate and culturally competent leaders.
You may pay tribute to our cherished teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend by making a gift today. We need your support to build an endowment that appropriately honors and celebrates Dr. Moely's pioneering scholarship. By contributing to the Moely service-learning fund, you will help Tulane invigorate faculty-led research and coursework that tackles social problems with courage, creativity, and conviction.
As professor emerita of psychology, Dr. Moely is more engaged than ever in research that enhances what we know about the community-centered research and service. Over the past two years alone, she has presented 17 papers at service-learning conferences from Washington to New York - a remarkable achievement! - while assisting the Center for Public Service as a research analyst.
I hope you will join me in paying tribute to Dr. Moely's outstanding commitment by making a gift today.
