Maggie Birkel

Maggie Birkel

Maggie hails from Washington, D.C. She graduated from Northwestern University with a B.A. in History and Gender Studies, where she was one of the co-directors of NU’s Living Wage Campaign and served as one of the co-chairs for the Freshman Urban Program, a pre-orientation program focused on the city of Chicago -- both its unique culture and its challenges with poverty, education, youth crime, and other social justice issues. Maggie has had a long love affair with the city of New Orleans – planning and attending six rebuilding trips in the years following Katrina and even writing her senior thesis on various late 20th-century social movements in the city. In the fall of 2012, she finally made the move to living in the city full-time through the Episcopal Service Corps Living With Purpose Fellowship (LWP). Her site placement through LWP was Eden House, a residential recovery program for women transitioning out of prostitution and sex trafficking. Maggie is thrilled that Eden House was selected as an AmeriCorps VISTA placement for 2013-2014 and that she was selected to continue her work with this essential
