Maximize Learning and Service Outcomes: A Public Service Activity Management Training

How CPS Internships Benefit Community Partners
More than 100 juniors and seniors at Tulane enroll in public service internships each fall and spring semester, dedicating a chunk of time and effort into an organization's mission and to a specific project. This seminar discussed the how internships work and how Community Partners can maximize the benefits of interns in the workplace. In addition, frequently asked questions were addressed.

Grant Writing Basics
CPS workshop on Grant Writing Basics, presented by local expert Bonnie Goldblum, included a wealth of standard information and tips from the expert on writing grants for non profits. The workshop included the insightful presentation linked above, a list of Funder Resources, and a Grant Writing Glossary for commonly used acronyms and lingo.

Greening Your Organization
Follow the above link for resources on how to made environmentally-friendly and energy-saving changes to your organization, presented at a CPS workshop featuring our partners Alliance for Affordable Energy, Green Light New Orleans, and Gulf Restoration Network. Assessing Community Need
Tulane's Prevention Research Center presented an interactive workshop on the components of assessing community need.

Program Development
Bonnie Goldblum presented the key steps, questions, and hurdles to consider when developing a new program in your nonprofit. Sample handouts available: Logic Model, Mission to Outcomes and Program Budget Worksheets.

Volunteer Recruitment, Supervision, & Retention
Cathy Puett of HandsOn New Orleans presented the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of volunteer coordination and management.

Budget Development & Management
Presenters Judy Vitrano, Associate Budget Director, and Niccola Wolf, Assistant Dean of Administration, of Tulane University shared advice and experience about nonprofit budget management. Sample handouts available in Excel spreadsheets: budget development, budget cashflow, budget reporting.

Social Entrepreneurism & Fee-Generating Services
Presenter Stephanie Barksdale, who works with Social Entrepreneurship Initiatives at Tulane, led this presentation about helping organizations define social entrepreneurism and brainstorm about the extensive possibilities and opportunities an organization can pursue via fee-generating services.

Marketing & Outreach
Organizations learned how to brand their mission and goals through marketing techniques to boost awareness in your community. They also discussed how marketing will help their organizations boost program numbers, create a stronger donor base, and develop a solid image for their organizations.
Organizations were asked to answer the following questions during the workshop and then ask their colleagues once they returned to the office:

1.What is the mission of your organization?
2.What is the product or services that your organization provides?
3.Who is the key/target market for the services you provide?
4.How do you presently communicate with your key market?
5.Assume that you have an opportunity to send a targeted message to those in your key market. In 100 words or less, please craft your message.

Program Evaluation
Attendees received helpful tips about how to determine the positive impacts an organization's programs have on the community. They Discussed what works and what doesn't, and brainstormed with other organizations about how to solve dilemmas, make revisions, and create stronger programs and support for those who an organization serves. Sample handouts available as PDFs: basic guide to program evaluation, project evaluation checklist and developing student learning outcomes.
