Vincent Ilustre, Executive Director

Vincent Ilustre directs the operations of the Center and its various affiliate programs. He provides leadership to the Center's staff and works with the Center's Faculty Executive Committee to ensure the Center's academic mission is met. Vincent received his Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Political Science from Tulane's Paul Tulane College and his Master's in Business Administration in Management and Marketing from Tulane's Freeman School of Business. Vincent is a founding member of the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Community Engagement and served as the Chair of its Executive Committee from 2004-2007. Vincent also serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the International Association for Service-learning and Community Engagement. He is a member of the Board of Director's of VIALink and was recently appointed by Governor Bobby Jindal to be a Commissioner with the Louisiana Serve Commission where he serves as Treasurer.

As Senior Executive Secretary, Lawrence is responsible for the daily operations of the Center. He is a native New Orleanian.

![]() Dr. Barbara Moely, Research Affiliate of the CPS Barbara conducts research for the Center, currently looking at college students’ service-learning participation, the development of community partnerships, and VISTA program participation.She has implemented several funded projects, presents research at regional, national, and international conferences, and has authored research reports for professional journals. She serves on the Editorial Board of the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning. She earned her doctorate in Developmental Psychology from the University of Minnesota. |
Katie Case Harrington, Development Officer

Katie is the Development Officer for Undergraduate Programming at Tulane University. Katie works with Tulane’s alumni, parents, and friends to raise support for programs and initiatives at the Center for Public Service, the Newcomb College Institute, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Newcomb-Tulane Undergraduate College. Katie received her Bachelor’s degree in Management and Marketing at Tulane’s A.B. Freeman School of Business and is currently enrolled in Tulane’s Professional Masters in Business Administration program.

![]() Amanda Buberger, Assistant Director Amanda oversees the partnership process, training, outreach, and research. She has enjoyed supporting hundreds of service learning partnerships with New Orleans-based organizations since 1999. Amanda graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Newcomb College. When she isn't working for CPS, Amanda spends time on an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Urban Ecology and rebuilding historic residential property. |
![]() Michael Pizzolato, Program Manager Michael works to build partnerships between the New Orleans community and the university. He supervises an AmeriCorps*VISTA program. This program has been recognized as one of the best 'Corporation for National and Community Service' funded programs in Louisiana. Prior to Tulane, Michael worked with Catholic Charities of New Orleans. He worked in the emergency services office and with a homelessness prevention program for families. Following completion of his Bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Sociology from Millsaps College, he served for one year with an education-focused non-governmental organization in Honduras.

![]() Bridget Smith, Senior Program Coordinator Bridget assists community agencies new to the partnership process, as well as coordinating the Spanish department's Service Learning courses. As the contact person for the Help NOLA program, she also offers guidance to groups from around the country looking to volunteer in New Orleans. Prior to CPS, Bridget has worked with various recovery agencies assisting displaced families post-Katrina. After receiving her Bachelor's degree in International Development and Latin American Studies from UCLA, Bridget has spent time volunteering in East Africa and traveling extensively throughout Latin America. Outside of work, Bridget enjoys dancing with New Orleans' Casa Samba and learning to play Latin percussion. |
![]() Dr. Agnieszka Nance, Assistant Director Agnieszka is responsible for providing a wide variety of services and support for Tulane faculty engaged in service learning, ranging from course coordination to various workshops, seminars, grant opportunities, and conferences. As a former faculty member at Tulane, Agnieszka's goal is to address her colleague's questions and concerns regarding service learning and the graduation requirement for Tulane students. In 2004, she received her Ph.D. in Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Hook 'em Horns! Before moving to the United States, she lived and studied in Warsaw and Vienna, earning a Magister degree in Germanistik. Agneiszka enjoys reading, traveling, teaching and practicing yoga, as well as the stress relief of BodyCombat. |

![]() Adam Beebe, Senior Program Corodinator Adam coordinates service learning for Tulane courses. Having grown up mainly in Chicago, Adam obtained a BA from the University of Chicago and is currently working towards finishing his MA in Latin American Studies from Tulane with a thesis focusing on Brazilian poetry in the 1970s. He is also involved with community radio and is an executive staff volunteer and DJ at WTUL.

![]() Maurice Smith, Senior Program Coordinator Maurice coordinates service learning classes in a wide range of disciplines, providing support to both faculty and students throughout the semester. He obtained his M.Ed in College Student Personnel Administration from James Madison University and his BA in Communications from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and studied Graphic Design at Loyola University New Orleans. In his spare time he enjoys photography, art, cooking, and cartoons. |

She oversees the Semester in NOLA program, as well as planning panel discussions, training, and leadership development workshops for students participating in different service learning opportunities. Katie received her Bachelor's degree in History and her Master's in American Studies from the Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO. |
![]() Avery Brewton, Program Manager Avery Brewton serves as the Community Service Program Manager, advising student groups about community service opportunities and overseeing the Community Service Scholars program. In addition, she is the university's contact person for the Help NOLA program through which she assists students, community leaders, and faculty from around the country in promoting and coordinating volunteer opportunities throughout New Orleans. Prior to joining the staff at CPS, Avery served as an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to American (VISTA) at the Neighborhood Gallery. A graduate of Florida A & M University, Avery holds a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a concentration in Urban Studies and Economic Development. |

Craig develops the public service fellows program by coordinating roles with faculty members and helping to recruit, train, and supervise students for service learning projects. In 2005 Craig received his Master's degree in Higher Education Administration from Baylor University, where he also earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Besides being an avid sports fan Craig devotes his spare time to running, sampling New Orleans' local restaurants, and serving in the Young Leadership Council. |

Tulane University’s Center for Public Service collaborated with the AmeriCorps*VISTA Program to sponsor 25 AmeriCorps*VISTA members to work full-time with community partners to assist in their efforts to serve New Orleans. During their term VISTA members work to develop and forge long-term partnerships between the local community and the Center for Public Service, which oversees the public service graduation requirement for Newcomb-Tulane undergraduate students.
VISTA members act as liaisons between the Center for Public Service and the community and help to arrange service-learning and internship experiences for students at their placement site.
The goal of this program is to have AmeriCorps* Vista members, Tulane students, faculty, and staff assist community partners with capacity building in the coming years as the city recovers from Hurricane Katrina.

Monica Ponoroff

Monica Ponoroff is the Director of the For The Children Reading Program, a community outreach program of Tulane University. As Director, she is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the program and program development. For The Children is now in its fourteenth year of continuous operation in the Orleans Parish School System under Ms. Ponoroff’s direction. Ms. Ponoroff, received her A.B. degree in Social Work from Loyola University of Chicago.

Marie Gould, Site Director, Banneker School

Marie has worked with For The Children since 2002. She is currently the site director at Banneker School – one of the program’s two school sites – where she recruits, advises, trains, and supervises Tulane service learners, student workers, interns and volunteers. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and Masters Degree from University of New Orleans. She is an Educational Diagnostician and Certified Reading Specialist with additional state certifications in deaf education and mental disabilities. She has a long career working in education and media as well as with college students, including an annual position as an administrator with a summer journalism program at the University of Urbino in Italy . She also has had tenures as a regular newspaper columnist and as a travel writer.

Dr. Jones is committed to the growth and success of the Upward Bound program and the revitalization of the New Orleans education system. She has lead in the higher education field for over 10 years and has facilitated university and community partnerships, program development and policy development. She has taught Evaluation and Assessment and Designing Local Programs and Research Skills at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York. Dr. Jones received her Master's degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in Educational Policy Studies and her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Research from Louisiana State University.
![]() Penny Johnson Ward Penny Ward is a graduate of Southern University at New Orleans. Presently, she is an Urban Studies graduate student at the University of New Orleans, concentrating in Cultural and Historical Preservation. Before joining Tulane’s Upward Bound Program, Penny taught in Orleans Parish for four years as a high school Social Studies teacher, and for one year, as a middle schools teacher. |
