Social Innovation

By including Social Innovation Engagement (CELT-SI) in the Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching, Tulane has the opportunity to build upon its strengths in civic engagement and service learning and provide opportunities for students to apply their skills and knowledge to create social change. Tulane and CELT-SI define social innovation as the process of drawing on innovation to create sustainable, scalable solutions to our most pressing social challenges.  Working at the intersection of business, nonprofit, and government agencies, social innovators blend models and create mission-driven ventures to effect positive social change. Tulane began developing university-wide, interdisciplinary initiatives in social innovation to better understand and create new models for social change in Fall 2009. This field has expanded rapidly across disciplines, as academics realize that utilizing innovation to solve pressing social challenges is relevant across disciplines. It is in this solution-oriented spirit that CELT-SI hopes to engage a new generation of social innovators.
