Gwen Thompkins, is the former East Africa bureau chief for National Public Radio, based in Nairobi, Kenya. She was also the longtime editor of NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday, with Scott Simon. In 2011, after a Nieman Foundation for Journalism fellowship at Harvard University, Thompkins returned home to New Orleans. Thompkins is a freelance writer and commentator for NPR. She’s also the creator, host and executive producer of Music Inside Out, with Gwen Thompkins, a public radio program featuring Louisiana artists whose music resonates around the world.
