Fridays at Newcomb

Ethics of Perception in Cole Swensen's Ekphrastic Poetry

featuring Dr. Teresa Villa-Ignacio

Date: Friday, November 22, 2013
Time: 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM
Building: Caroline Richardson Building, Anna Many Lounge
Location: uptown campus

Description: Cole Swensen's poetry mobilizes a profound exploration of the sensory history of France, and more generally of Europe, as a contemporary American poetic topos. This presentation explores how her ekphrastic meditations on European visual art become a springboard for an American ethics of perception, one that is simultaneously idealistic and troubling in its project to perceive that which escapes perception..

Teresa Villa–Ignacio is Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities in the Department of French and Italian. Her interests include contemporary French, Francophone, and U.S. American poetry, ethical philosophy, translation, postcolonial studies, immigration, and multiculturalism. She is completing a book manuscript entitled Poethical Import: Translationships in French-American Poetic Exchange, which examines the centrality of ethics in relations of translation and collaboration among France- and U.S.-based contemporary experimental poets. She is also co-editing an anthology of selected texts in translation from the post-Independence Moroccan literary and cultural journal Souffles-Anfas. With support from the Newcomb College Institute and the Collat Media Lab, she is producing a podcast on the translation of contemporary poetry, entitled Sounding Translation, which goes live next month.
