Fridays at Newcomb

City Without Memory?

featuring Marta Madejska, Master, PhD Candidate, Institute of Contemporary Culture, University of Lodz

Date: Friday, November 8, 2013
Time: 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM
Building: Caroline Richardson Building, Anna Many Lounge
Location: uptown campus

Problems with memory and remembrance within the contemporary City of Lodz (Poland) pushed my research into an area of interest that examines the various mechanisms of memory and cultural transmission. I will try to explain briefly this city's complicated history and reasons for its "memory problems". Then "Memory Project" (an art event connecting New Orleans and Lodz 2012) a case study, will help me demonstrate how we can "read" art to learn something about the biographical and collective memory; how we can access reminiscences, or notice the lack of them in a city space; and how a city space sometimes “remembers” more than its inhabitants.
