Jewish Music in New Orleans

 A concert of Synagogue Music of Europe, America, and New Orleans”will take place on Sunday, March 3rd at 7 PM in Dixon Recital Hall on the Uptown Campus of Tulane UniversityFeatured on the program will be Cantorial Soloist Victoria May, Cantor Joel Colman, Cantor Jamie Marx, and the Tulane University Choir, Leonard Raybon,conductor; David Reis, accompanist.   The concert is free and open to the public.

 This performance is the opening event of a day-long conference ,the following day entitled, From Europeto New Orleans: Jewish Music Past and Present.” Held in Rogers Memorial Chapel, on the Uptown Campus, it is sponsored by the American Society for Jewish Musics Jewish Music Forum, Tulane’s Newcomb Department of Music and Department of Jewish Studies,the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South, Temple Sinai (New Orleans), and Cantor Jamie Marx, Touro Synagogue(New Orleans).

The conference, which includes distinguished scholars from Indiana University, Brandeis University, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, as well as Tulane faculty and New Orleans historical experts, was organized by Tulane University musicologist, Dr. John H. Baron, in conjunction with the Jewish Music Forum, the academic arm of the American Society for Jewish Music.
