Join students, faculty and staff for the Newcomb-Tulane College Friday morning tradition of coffee, donuts, fruit and stimulating conversation on the porch of Cudd Hall. Every first Friday of the month, the Dean's Coffee also presents live music.
This month's featured performer is Helen Gillet, a renowned cellist, vocalist, songwriter and improviser, whom music critic John Swenson has described as “among the most versatile and creative musicians working in the Crescent City.” Gillet uses electromagnetic effects, looping and vocal percussion to explore sound as well as the wide range of natural sounds drawn out through the acoustic cello.
When she's not playing with over 20 groups in New Orleans, including Naked Orchestra, the Johnny Vidacovich Trio and Leroy Jones, she enjoys teaching improvisation-based soundtrack, beat box and ukulele classes. She recently completed recording for a new album by acclaimed singer-songwriter Marianne Faithfull, and has been nominated for OffBeat magazine’s “Best of the Beat 2010” award in the “other instrument” category.
