Performance and Lecture on Mizrachi Jewish singing

featuring Galeet Dardashti

Middle Eastern vocalist and composer Galeet Dardashti continues her family tradition of distinguished Persian and Jewish musicianship. During this class visit, which is open to the public, Dardashti will demonstrate the melismatic vocal ornaments present in Mizrachi Jewish music and Persian classical music. She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in cultural politics and contemporary Middle Eastern/Arab music in Israel. She has published widely on her work and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at New York University at the Taub Center for Israel Studies.
