Film Screening of "A Better Life" and Panel

Date: Thursday, November 1, 2012
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Building: Goldring/Woldenberg Hall II in Room 3111
Location: uptown campus

GENTE is a student group on Tulane's campus that seeks to raise awareness of issues pertinent to the Latino community and its culture. GENTE particularly selected this filmed because it touches on a topic that our membership felt should be more openly discussed on campus - undocumented immigration. A panel will be held after the movie and comprised of a group of people representing multiple interests of the immigrant community. Two actors from the film, Richard Cabral and Chelsea Rendon, two members from the Congress of Day Laborers of New Orleans, and two professors from Loyola University will share their personal experiences related to the topic. Movie Plot - Carlos Galindo (Demian Bichir) works as a gardener and is a single father raising a teenage son, Luis (Jose Julian), who is being persuaded to be a member of a gang in Los Angeles, CA. The story develops as both father and son try to recover their recently stolen truck. The film covers issues related to undocumented workers, a teenager growing up in an inner city, and a father trying to offer his best to his son.
