 Dr. Pamela Tyler is a Visiting Associate Professor from the University of Southern Mississippi, affiliated this year with the Newcomb College Institute
In the 19th century, a small group of New Orleans women stepped forward to found and operate an institution for orphaned girls. In the process, they sometimes worked in ways that defied the century's usual definition of "ladylike."
