Harriet M. Phinney, PhD,  focuses her research on gender, sexuality, politics of reproduction,  “the body”, affect and emotion, marital and family law, kinship, single mothers, political economy, effects of war, HIV/AIDS, risk, reproductive and sexual health, and Vietnam. She has published articles in journals such as the American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Critical Public Health, and positions.  Her first book, The Secret: Love, Marriage and HIV (Vanderbilt University Press, 2009), which was coauthored with Jennifer S. Hirsch, Holly Wardlow, Daniel J. Smith, Shanti Parikh, and Constance Nathanson, analyzes the social organization of extramarital sexual practices in Mexico, Nigeria, Uganda, Vietnam, and Papua-New Guinea and the implications of those practices for married women's HIV risk.
