MEET THE STAFF

A. Shawn McWashington
Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services

Shawn McWashington

Shawn came to Tulane University from Florida State University where he was a compliance protégé of Bob Minnix, associate athletic director for compliance and legal affairs. Two weeks after being hired at Tulane, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast region. The academic services office was underwater for days as a result of the ensuing floods. Once the waters receded Shawn and his staff were challenged to recreate student-athlete academic services from scratch.

Since Shawn has been at Tulane, more than 55 percent of the student-athletes have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and NCAA President Myles Brand has applauded the athletics department as a whole for exceptional APR numbers in the wake of tragedy. One of the more celebrated programs that Shawn has implemented is a monthly workshop utilizing university resources to educate academically at-risk student-athletes.

Shawn is a native of Seattle, Wash., where he attended Washington State University. He was a four-year letter winner and three-year starter on a team that reached the 1998 Rose Bowl, though lost to then-national champion University of Michigan. As a former wide receiver, he is credited with the motion capture for SEGA’s NFL 2K video game. During his professional football career he played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Amsterdam Admirals, Pittsburg Steelers, Edmonton Eskimos and the British Columbia Lions.

Shawn received his undergraduate degree in communications and his master's in education administration. He has completed the coursework for his PhD in sports management.
