Dermot McGlinchey Lifetime Achievement Award 1996

Donald-Nalty017

Donald J. Nalty, Sr.

In establishing the Dermot S. McGlinchey Lifetime Achievement Award, Tulane Univsersity pays tribute to a dedicated alumnus, Dermot McGlinchey (A&S '54, L '57), whose life was marked by outstanding professional accomplishments, extraordinary community service and significant volunteer leadership and commitment to the university.

By naming Donald J. Nalty as the award's first recipient, Tulane, likewise, honors an individual who embodies the same admirable characteristics of achievement, in terms of his professional, community and university leadership and service.

During his professional career, Dermot McGlinchey, founder and senior director of New Orleans' law firm McGlinchey Stafford and Lang, was a leader in many legal and cultural organizations, including the American Bar Goundation, the Louisiana Bar FDoundation, the New Orleans Opera Association and the Friends of the Louisiana Law Library, to name only a few. At the same time, he had an unfailing devotion to Tulane, which he expressed by steadily serving the university as president of the Tulane Alumni Association and as a member of numerous advisory boards, such as the Law School Dean's Council, the Law School Building Campaign Committee and the President's Council.

Possessing as strong an allegiance to the university as the award's namesake, Donald Nalty has been equally as important to Tulane. A native New Orleanian, Nalty graduated from Villanova University in 1957 with a bachelor of science in economics and from the National Trust School at Northwester University in 1960. He joined Hibernia National Bank in 1958, and, within seven years, was named to the position of vice president. Today, Nalty, serves as vice chairman of Hibernia, now one of the state's largest banking institution, and as a director of the bank's holding company, Hibernia Corp. He is also a partner in the Nalty Tree Farm in Brewton, Ala.

A member of the Tulane Board of Administrators since 1984, Nalty serves on the executive committee of the university's current fundraising campaign, Tulane for the New Century, and previously served on the board of governors of Tulane University Medical Center.

Though not a Tulane alumnus himself, Nalty, who is married to the former Elizabeth "Betsy" Shaw, has long been associated with Tulane. His father-in-law, Morgan L. Shaw (B '31), his brother Paul Nalty (L '62), and three of his four children-Donald James Nalty Jr. (UC '86), Morgan Shaw Nalty (UC '89) and Elizabeth Shaw Nalty (NC '92)-are graduates of Tulane, Daughter Helen Hardie Nalty graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va.

In addition to his efforts on behalf of Tulane, Nalty has found time to serve on the boards of local hospitals, schools, charity groups, business and numerous foundations and civic organizations. At present, he is a member of the board of trustees and secretary of The Booth-Bricker Fund; president of the Edward A. Schlieder Educational Foundation; a member of the board of trustees and the executive committee of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital; a director and trustee of the Young Men's Chrisitan Association (YMCA); a member of Financial Analysts of New Orleans; a member of the advisory and steering committees of the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs, Miss.; a member of the advisory committee of the Louisiana Nature & Science Center Inc.; and a member of the President's Advisory Council of Centenary College.
