Three teams of Tulane University biomedical engineering students will showcase their inventions to assist patients with ALS and other neuromuscular diseases Thursday night as part of a fundraiser to benefit Team Gleason.
The event, “Cheers for Charity,” will take place Thursday, April 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Rusty Nail, 1100 Constance St. It is being presented by Health 2.0 New Orleans, which promotes local entrepreneurship in health care, and Team Gleason, the foundation started by former New Orleans Saint Steve Gleason following his ALS diagnosis.
Tickets are $20 online or $30 at the door. Admission includes crawfish, beer, raffles and entertainment by Johnny Angel and Helldorado. The event will also feature presentations by Tulane biomedical engineering students, who will demonstrate assistive technologies they invented during a year-long project focused on addressing real-world problems.
The Tulane teams are Team No’mo’nia, which developed a patient monitoring system for reducing incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia; Team Inventilator, which developed improved airway clearance for persons on long-term ventilator support; and Team Hawkeye, which used existing eye-tracking technology and other components to develop an affordable motorized wheelchair control system inspired by Gleason.
The teams worked with Team Gleason throughout the year, and Gleason contributed to the direction of the projects. Students also worked with St. Margaret’s at Mercy, home of the Team Gleason House, a household engineered to accommodate patients with ALS and multiple sclerosis.
“Something special is happening in the community and beyond, inspired by Steve Gleason, and we’re proud to be a part of it,” said Tulane professor of practice Lars Gilbertson, who oversaw the students’ projects.
Proceeds from the event, which is being sponsored by Bellwether Technologies, will benefit Team Gleason, which helps provide new technologies to patients with neuromuscular diseases and documents extraordinary life adventures for individuals with such diseases.
