With the theme Move, Fuel, Balance and Thrive, the Tulane University employee wellness program is teaming up with the student health service to create a culture that encourages everyone on campus to get moving.
The first initiative, StairWELL, kicks off on Monday (Jan. 28) with an event — including free lunch and give-aways — in Pocket Park on the uptown campus from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
“The vision for TUWellness
is a healthy campus community that is an inspiring place to learn, work and live,” says Lindsay Garcia, the new, full-time wellness coordinator for faculty and staff members. “This year, we are focusing on ways to better cardiovascular health and stress management. Employees will have chances throughout the year to adopt healthy habits for eating well, moving your body, changing behavior and relieving stress.”
Small daily changes make a big difference in creating a culture of health, says Garcia, a certified health education specialist. Focusing on “Let’s Get Physical” just as New Year’s resolutions may be waning, she encourages employees to team up with co-workers to start “taking steps” to better health.
“Start thinking about incorporating activity into your daily routine,” Garcia coaches. “Take the stairs instead of riding in the elevator. Walk to work, walk at lunchtime. It’s one step toward becoming more active.”
Garcia says that climbing stairs burns 10 calories a minute, the same calorie burn as working out on an elliptical machine.
The stair-climbing campaign began last year with the housing and residence life office, and now TUWellness is planning to make it a wider effort.
In addition, United Healthcare, the university’s health insurer, is offering free, monthly health seminars on all of the Tulane campuses, beginning Jan. 30 – Feb. 1.
