Canvas Learning Management System Pilot

Posted: 19 Jan 2016

The Learning Management System is an integral part of the educational experience at any institution of higher education. Often this system is the first place where the interaction between students and faculty happens in any given semester. If the system is robust enough, it can foster a deeper understanding of the material and help to assess student comprehension across the term. With these systems filling such an important role, it is necessary to evaluate the options every few years in order to make sure we are providing the best tools to our community. To this end over the fall 2015 semester Technology Services conducted a limited pilot of the Canvas Learning Management System in approximately 20 courses across the university. The results from this pilot were very encouraging with a majority of both student and faculty users preferring the new tool to our current LMS, Blackboard. For spring of 2016 we are expanding our pilot to invite anyone on campus to participate. This invite includes faculty wishing to offer classes, students looking for a new place to host campus organizations, or any staff who currently operate resources in Blackboard.
