Class of 2018 Profile
Tulane received 9,527 AMCAS applications this year for a class of 185 students. The incoming class’s MCAT score average was 33 and their overall undergraduate GPA was 3.52 with ages ranging from 20 to 36 years.
Thirty one states as well as four countries, are represented with California, Louisiana, Florida, New York, Massachusetts and Illinois having the greatest numbers. Eighty colleges and universities are represented in this year’s Class with Tulane, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Virginia, Boston College and Duke positioned at the top of the list.
Some class members already possess an advanced degree including 28 with a Masters of Science, 4 with a Masters of Public Health, 1 with a M.S.E, and 3 with PhDs. The top seven majors were biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, cellular and molecular biology, psychology, and chemistry. Other majors include public health, philosophy, history, english and physics. Non-science majors make up 49% of the Class compared to 51% of those who are science majors.
We have a former member of the Bowdoin College Varsity Swimming and Diving Team, the former President of the Notre Dame Ski Team, the former VP of the Duke Cycling Club, a former member of the Emory Varsity Volleyball Team, a Pro Basketball player in Italy, a former member of the Amherst football team and Yale’s ECAC Beam Champion. Many members of the Class played varsity sports including rowing, basketball, swimming, rugby, crew, lacrosse, and golf. Other sports represented include ice hockey, water polo, javelin, billiards and wrestling. In the arts, students have participated in improvisational theater, photography, dance, singing/songwriting, orchestra and glass blowing.
Musical instruments played include keyboards, violin, saxophone, piano, drums, flute, guitar, viola, oboe, cello, English horn and trumpet. We have a former member of the DASAC hip hop dance group at Amherst, a clarinetist who performed at Carnegie Hall, and a classically trained trumpet player.
For leisure time members of the Class of 2018 enjoy collecting comic books, collecting wild mushrooms, and attending garage sales. We have a former real estate agent from Oklahoma, a founder of a freelance wedding photography company, a writer for the Castro Valley Forum and San Leandro Times as well as a stagehand for the New York Metropolitan Opera House. We have 9 Eagle Scouts, 1 former Peace Corps volunteer, 12 AmeriCorps volunteers and 3 Teach for America volunteers. Fifty one students have gone abroad to do community service or work/travel.
