The concert that was scheduled for Dec. 3 featuring rock band KANSAS with the Tulane University Orchestra at McAlister Auditorium has been cancelled. According to the band's publicist, the concert may be rescheduled at a later date. The Tulane University Orchestra is headed to the point of "know" return. The legendary rock band KANSAS will perform with the orchestra in a special concert benefiting the Newcomb Department of Music at 8 p.m. on Dec. 3 in Tulane’s McAlister Auditorium.

A fixture of classic rock radio stations with hits such as “Dust in the Wind,” “Carry On My Wayward Son” and “Point of Know Return,” KANSAS’ performance with Tulane’s orchestra is part of an extensive collegiate tour to help raise money for college music programs.  

A limited number of tickets are available for $40 through the Tulane box office. Proceeds from tickets sold by Tulane will benefit the music department; contact 504-865-5269 to purchase. Tickets can also be purchased through Ticketmaster.

Maxim Samarov, conductor of the Tulane University Orchestra, says the opportunity to play music with the rock band has been an enjoyable experience for himself and the students. They received sheet music from the band several weeks ago and rehearsals for the Dec. 3 concert are underway.


“In terms of preparation, there's not a whole lot of difference between this project and what we usually do--there are notes to be learned, tricky passages and rhythms to be mastered and so on,” said Samarov. “The style of this music is different from what we usually do, but then even within standard orchestral literature there is a wide variety of styles, so that's just another style we need to learn.”

With their self-titled first album released in 1974, KANSAS went on to become one of the decade’s most popular rock acts – issuing classic rock albums such as 1976’s Leftoverture and 1977’s Point of Know Return. The band is comprised of singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh, guitarist Rich Williams, bassist Billy Greer, drummer Phil Ehart and violinist David Ragsdale.
