Tulane University President Scott Cowen will join New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, TIME Managing Editor Rick Stengel, Tavis Smiley and other business, political and non-profit leaders at the Opportunity Nation Summit, Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 in New York.
Opportunity Nation is a bipartisan coalition of non-profits, foundations, educators, business and political leaders working to increase opportunity and access to the American Dream. The summit will start a national dialogue on opportunity, highlight solutions and encourage the presidential candidates and Congress to make economic opportunity a priority. A poll on assets and barriers to upward mobility will also be released at the summit.
Cowen will participate in a panel discussion about how institutions such as universities can generate opportunities in communities from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 4 at Columbia University's Alfred J. Lerner Hall.
Cowen was chosen to participate in the summit because of Tulane’s leadership as the country’s first and only major research university to integrate community engagement into its undergraduate core curriculum and for launching Tulane Empowers, an effort to use the knowledge, expertise and energy of Tulane to increase opportunity by empowering others.
As part of the Opportunity Nation network, Tulane will host a “bright spot” event called Growing Opportunity on March 29, 2012. Held in conjunction with the NCAA Men’s Final Four in New Orleans, Growing Opportunity will bring together schoolchildren, Tulane students and community members to plant fruit trees and learn lessons on cultivation, nutrition, environmental stewardship and job opportunities at the Grow Dat Youth Farm in New Orleans’ City Park.
The Opportunity Nation summit will be live streamed and include a “Conversation Room” where attendees and speakers can communicate via video. For more information visit: www.OpportunityNation.org. For media access to the summit contact: Elleni@pointblankpa.com
