Tulane University urologists are the driving forces behind an international medical conference that will bring 2,500 of the world’s leading urologists to New Orleans later this month to learn, teach and perform minimally invasive techniques which have pushed the frontiers of urologic surgery.

The 31st World Congress of Endourology, scheduled for Oct. 22-26 at the Sheraton New Orleans, is the premier international meeting for minimally invasive surgical urology, featuring live surgery, instructional courses, hands-on seminars, research announcements and interactive sessions by leaders in the field.

The event was planned and organized by the team from Tulane Urology, Dr. Raju Thomas, chair of urology for Tulane University School of Medicine, and Dr. Benjamin Lee, urology professor and director of robotics, laparoscopy and endourology for Tulane Medical Center.

“This is the culmination of four years of hard work. We have a packed scientific and social program ready for our international guests,” said Lee, who was part of the team that secured New Orleans as a host city. Each year the congress is held in a major world city, with past programs held in Shanghai, Munich, Kyoto and Istanbul.

One of the conference’s highlights will be a live surgery broadcast from the operating room at Tulane Medical Center. Dr. Lee will demonstrate a robotic partial nephrectomy, a difficult and advanced robotic procedure to treat kidney cancer. The laparoscopic technique removes diseased tumor tissue while preserving 50 to 70 percent of the kidney.

“This remnant of kidney is enough to keep the patient off dialysis if anything adverse happened to the other kidney,” says Lee, who has extensive experience with minimally invasive approaches to treating kidney and prostate cancer, and specializes in robotic urologic cancer surgery.
