More than 1,000 Tulane University students, faculty, staff and alumni will volunteer in numerous locations throughout the Broadmoor and Central City neighborhoods Saturday, August 31, as part of Outreach Tulane, an annual day of community service.

The university’s largest service event, Outreach Tulane sends more than 1,000 volunteers into the streets of New Orleans at the start of each academic year.

“Outreach Tulane is the perfect springboard for a year of community service,” says Samantha Gould, chair of the Community Action Council of Tulane University Students (CACTUS). “For freshman and upperclassmen alike it is a great reminder of how rewarding service is and how easy it can be to get involved.”

Outreach Tulane will partner with community groups such as Green Light New Orleans to help replace light bulbs in homes with free, energy-efficient counterparts. Volunteers working with Green Light will counsel community members on energy efficiency and environmental awareness. Other projects planned for the day of service include painting murals, planting gardens, rebuilding and repairing K-12 schools and beautification projects to reduce blight in neighborhoods.

Outreach Tulane is organized by CACTUS with support from the Tulane Center for Public Service, Newcomb-Tulane College, the Tulane Office of Admissions, Tulane Orientation, Tulane Undergraduate Student Government, the Murphy Institute, the Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin American Studies, Coca-Cola, and the Whole Foods Market.

“This year our goal is to have students continue volunteering past Outreach Tulane,” says Gould. “The Center for Public Service will be organizing a 'Make A Difference Activities Fair' several weeks after Outreach Tulane at which community organizations can recruit students. We are hoping students will enjoy their experience and want to continue volunteering through the school year.”
