Tulane University has signed an agreement with the Confucius Institute Headquarters of China to establish the Confucius Institute at Tulane University, a center that will promote the study of Chinese culture and language on campus and within the community.

The Institute, which will be within the School of Liberal Arts, will enhance Chinese language classes in the Asian Studies Program with a range of new teaching materials, software and hardware, a 3,000-volume Chinese language library and a dedicated, state-of-the-art language classroom.

There are 64 Confucius Institutes in the United States and most are affiliated with large public universities, says Jeremy Jernegan, associate dean of finance and planning for the School of Liberal Arts.

“The purpose of each Confucius Institute is to strengthen educational cooperation between China and the United States, support and promote the development of Chinese Language education and to increase the mutual understanding among people in China and the United States,” Jernegan says.

Huimin Xie, professor of practice in Asian studies, will serve as the Institute’s director, Jernegan says. Tulane also will partner with the East China Normal University in Shanghai to run the Institute. East China Normal University will provide a co-director and an instructor to teach and oversee language curriculum, direct outreach projects for Louisiana Chinese language teachers, offer standardized Chinese proficiency testing and organize cultural activities for the broader Tulane community.

The Institute will engage the New Orleans community with a variety of cultural offerings and presentations including films, distinguished lectures, performances and culinary features. Plans call for the Institute to open in July.
