Tulane University employees have few excuses when it comes to increasing their level of fitness. Between on-campus Weight Watchers meetings, access to a state-of the art recreational facility, Audubon Park across the street and friendly competitions that challenge them to get moving, faculty and staff members have a leg up on accomplishing their goals.

Lindsay Garcia, coordinator of TUWellness, says she hopes the success of this past fall’s programs will become a motivator for others interested in increasing their level of physical activity.

“We had 350 Tulane employees complete 500 days worth of physical activity hours in the Live Healthy Challenge that wrapped at the end of November,” says Garcia. “During the Weight Watchers at Work program we had 108 employees who participated for 17 weeks.”

Weight Watchers participants lost a combined 1,257 pounds.

Incentives also are a big part of encouraging activity.

Ten participants of the Live Healthy Tulane initiative, during which employees created teams and competed for the most logged hours of physical activity, received a Jawbone UP activity tracking bracelet— a $129 value. T-shirts, free personal training sessions and free gym memberships were provided to all who joined.

If you happened to miss out on these activities, begin planning for the next set that is scheduled to begin in January. The next Live Healthy Challenge will launch Monday (Jan. 27) and Weight Watchers at Work will commence Monday (Jan. 13).
