News from Tulane

The Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching (CELT) is working to make the process of finding an internship easier for Tulane University students. To that end, CELT administrators are seeking input from the Tulane community on Saturday (Nov. 17) from noon until 2 p.m. during the “Dat Voice” picnic in front of Richardson Hall on the academic quad.

With the launch of the CELT experiential engagement core this semester, the center’s four-core structure, which also includes classroom engagement, research engagement and social engagement, is now in place.

Allen Thomas, assistant director of experiential engagement, has been busy analyzing campus programs and services currently in place to assist students with finding internships.

“The experiential engagement core focuses on the development of specific programs and services that will lead to enhanced opportunities for students to engage in learning outside the classroom,” says Thomas. “For example, discussions are ongoing about how to best share information regarding internships and externships among students, faculty and staff while increasing the accessibility to this information online.”

Thomas says he also plans to partner with the Tulane Office of Alumni Relations to develop programs that connect undergraduate students with alumni for internship and externship opportunities. Student workshops, seminars and a competitive internship grants program also are in the works.

“Overall, we hope to increase the number of Tulane undergraduates who engage in meaningful internships and externships that enhance learning,” says Thomas. “The new experiential engagement core works collaboratively with the other CELT cores and the campus community at-large to develop sustainable and innovative programs and services, as well as serve as a source of campus innovation related to undergraduate internships and externships.”
