Stephen Martin Sr.

The family of the pioneering student-athlete, the late Stephen Martin Sr., receive his framed jersey during a tribute to Martin at the Green Wave football game on Saturday (Oct. 26). Martin became the first African-American to play a varsity sport in the Southeaster Conference when he took the field for the Tulane baseball team in 1966. Martin, who passed away on May 14, 2013, earned a BA in Latin as a Rockefeller Scholar and MBA as an Arthur Young Scholar from Tulane. He retired in 2012 as  the chief financial officer for Tuskegee University.
