Interview with an intern

Summers are a time for students to gain real-world experience in the form of an internship. Cara Zajac, a Tulane University senior studying psychology and history, provides a glimpse into her daily summer duties as an intern with the Tulane Parenting Education Program.

The program, run by the Tulane Infant Team, provides therapy, developmental assessments and other services to foster parents and foster children.

Cara, who hails from New Bedford, Massachusetts, is one of many Tulane students working an internship found through the Center for Public Service internship seminar.

How will this internship prepare you for your future career?
I’m interested in the field of clinical psychology and social work, so being able to observe and learn from the psychologists, social workers and parent-educators who run the program has been an invaluable experience. I’ve gained a lot of useful skills observing how different assessments are run and listening to the team’s interpretations afterwards.

What is your role in the program?
I observe and assist with interventions, assessments and group therapy meetings. I provide in-office childcare for children whose parents are receiving interventions or assessments that day. Additionally, I help manage case files, organize legal documents and make sure that all of our therapy materials are readily available.

Who or what is most inspiring to you on the job?
Hien Le Sanchez, the program coordinator, is almost always on the move, making appointments, running group therapy and generally making sure the whole office is as productive and efficient as possible. My mentor, Melissa Middleton, is working through her postdoc in psychology. I’ve watched her working with some of the younger clients and seeing her compassion for them is inspiring.
