'Most Outstanding Persons' of 2013 have Tulane ties

For the 40th consecutive year, Family Service of Greater New Orleans, one of the city’s oldest nonprofit social service organizations, is recognizing 10 individuals who, in the past year, generously gave of their time to volunteerism, civic leadership and philanthropy to benefit the common good.

The 2013 honorees with Tulane University affiliations are:
• Scott Cowen, Tulane University president;
• Dr. Karen DeSalvo, City of New Orleans health commissioner (MD and master of public health degree, 1992);
• Ti Martin, co-owner, Commander’s Palace (MBA, 1984);
• Robert Merrick, chair and CEO, Latter & Blum (bachelor’s degree, 1967);
• Anthony Recasner, CEO, Agenda for Children (master’s degree, 1986; PhD, 1988);
• Dottie Reese, Principal, DMM & Associates (master of social work, 1979; master of public health, 1980);
• Carroll W. Suggs, former chair and CEO, Petroleum Helicopters (member of the A. B. Freeman Business School Council).

Other honorees are Tommie Vassel, president, Global Profit Strategies; Guy Williams, CEO, Gulf Coast Bank; and Sonia Perez, president, AT&T Louisiana.

Since 1896, Family Service has provided individual, family and group mental health counseling as well as an integrated continuum of services to help resolve emotional problems including anxiety, addiction, child abuse, depression, family violence, parent-child difficulties, homelessness and trauma.

A member of the Alliance for Children and Families, Family Service is a United Way partner organization. It is accredited by the Council on Accreditation, having met rigorous internationally recognized standards of excellence for the quality of services and the quality of management.

In 2012, Family Service provided direct service to almost 13,000 individuals and families at offices in downtown New Orleans and on the West Bank, in Jefferson and St. Bernard Parishes.

The 2013 award winners will be honored on Oct. 23 at the annual Ten Outstanding Persons Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony to be held at the Pavilion of the Two Sisters in City Park.
