During campus move-out after the spring semester concludes, nearby dumpsters overflow with old shoes, clothes and sometimes appliances that are easier to discard than transport to a summer destination. The Tulane Office of Environmental Affairs has prepped a donation drive to curb some of the waste and simplify the process of recycling and donating to local organizations.

As students begin packing, items for donation should be bagged or boxed for easier delivery to the donation stations (think large delivery trucks). Stations will open in three locations beginning Thursday (May 9) through Saturday (May 11) from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.  Station locations include Drill Road at McAlister Way, behind Monroe Hall, and between Paterson and Sharp halls.

“We want to give students a sustainable option for usable items that they can’t take home or store,” says Rebecca Morgan of the Office of Environmental Affairs. “Many of the household items will go straight to an agency that helps the homeless get set up in their own homes.”

Participating nonprofit organizations include Unity of Greater New Orleans, the Salvation Army, Second Harvest Food Bank, Arc of Greater New Orleans and Books to Prisoners.

Clothes and household items should be brought to the donation trucks, while non-perishable food, Mardi Gras beads and books can be dropped in collection containers near the front desk of each residence hall.

For graduating seniors, there will be a special donation station at Aron Apartments open from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. on the Sunday following commencement (May 19). The donation truck will be parked on Ben Weiner Drive.

After sorting through your wardrobe, Morgan says, “don’t forget to recycle all the regular stuff.” Recyclables include all paper, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and cardboard.
