Before taking a bite of that sugary donut, think again — that's the message from the Healthy Tulane 2020 Coalition. This spring, committee members collaborated with Sodexo, Newcomb College Institute, Housing and Residence Life and other departments to create the Healthy Campus Dining Guide that promotes nutritious food choices within the Tulane community.
As an appetizer, the guide discusses basic tips from eating fewer calories to hydrating well. The entrée of the guide offers suggestions for healthy meals at various dining locations on and off campus. For example, tofu with string beans is a recommendation at Panda Express in the Lavin-Bernick Center food court.
For dessert, the guide features a section entitled “Choose This, Not That!” in which it proposes healthy alternative meals such as eating oatmeal with fruit and nuts as a substitute for boxed sugar cereals.
Lindsay Garcia, TUWellness coordinator, says it is important for the Tulane community to abide by these healthy rules.
“The things that you are putting into your body affect the way your mind works,” says Garcia. “It affects what you do in class, it affects the way you live and it affects the way you use your body all week long.”
The guide is available online
and print versions were distributed to each department earlier in the semester. Garcia hopes faculty and staff will use it as a reference when refreshments are needed for meetings.
Although the final exam period is fast approaching and summer vacation is right around the corner, students and faculty members, as well as staff members, still have time to sculpt their beach bodies by making healthy eating choices. Garcia says that being on vacation is no reason to skip the salad, adding that the guide is “totally usable over the summer, too.”
