Working at Tulane University has its perks. Just ask 40-year employee Michael Crago who has been with the university since 1972. In that time he says, “I’ve worked with great people doing something I enjoy and I even got a wife out of the deal.”
His wife, Kathleen Crago, whom he met while responding to problems with the air conditioning in her office, is a former Tulane employee who spent 43 years with the university before retiring.
They have been married for 24 years.
“She kept calling to complain that she was too hot,” recalls Crago, who is now the energy management control service coordinator in the Physical Plant Department. “Back then, everything was manual. We had to go out and check the fans and the steam valves, but now the computer lets us know when something is wrong.”
At 26 when he began his career at Tulane, Crago, now 66, is one of 417 Tulane employees being recognized this week for reaching a milestone anniversary in 2012.
“This year, our honorees represent a total of 5,005 years of service,” says Denise O’Connell, customer relations consultant for the Tulane Workforce Management Organization. “Years of service for this year’s honorees range from five to 40 years.”
Other notable anniversaries include Argentina Acosta, assistant director of facilities services administration, 40 years; Sheila Favalora, senior program manager at the Payson Institute, 40 years; Louis Mayer, manager of environmental health and safety, 35 years; Marjorie McCants, lab research technician in the Gene Therapy Center, 35 years; Hubert Garrett, animal care supervisor at the Tulane National Research Primate Center, 30 years; and Gloria Jackson, animal care supervisor at the primate center, 30 years.
