A memorial service for Karen A. Sullivan, longtime research professor of medicine, will be held on Friday (March 22) at noon in the Tulane University School of Medicine Bowers Auditorium, 1555 Poydras Ave. Sullivan, who died on Dec. 28, 2012, served as director of the Tulane Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory for 29 years.

“Throughout her professional life, Karen was a member of multiple professional societies including the United Network for Organ Sharing, the American Association of Immunologists, the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, and the Clinical Immunology Society, among others,” says Dr. Laurianne Wild, professor of clinical medicine and chief of the section of clinical immunology, allergy and rheumatology.

Sullivan also served as the chair and member of numerous national committees, belonged to editorial boards for several journals and published more than 30 papers or book chapters.

“Karen was dedicated to Tulane University for nearly 30 years. She will be missed dearly by her Tulane family, friends and colleagues,” says Wild.

A native of Bronxville, N.Y, Sullivan received her PhD in microbiology and immunology in 1974 from Duke University. She completed two postdoctoral fellowships, one in London and the other at the Division of Laboratories and Research, New York Department of Health, in 1978.

Sullivan joined the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1983. She launched her professional career as an assistant professor and director of the histocompatibility laboratory at West Virginia University Medical Center in Morgantown, W.V., from 1978–1980.  For the next three years she was on the faculty of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Sloan-Kettering Division, Cornell University.
