A recent student survey revealed that incoming students were interested in receiving more assistance with career planning. In response, Newcomb-Tulane College in collaboration with the Freeman School of Business and the Office of Alumni Relations organized Career Wave, which will feature panel discussions on topics such as internships, utilizing LinkedIn and winning your dream job — to name a few.

While job fairs typically are beneficial for networking and a chance to obtain face time with employers, Career Wave will go beyond advice on finding a job to offer valuable information about how to get the job and build your network.

“We decided to host this intensive career-planning event right before the start of the semester and provide the same opportunities that are available all year long, but in a condensed form,” says James MacLaren, dean of the Tulane Newcomb College. “The advantage of having it in a single day is being able to assemble alumni and parents who can speak about the strategies they used in college and beyond.”

Once the event was announced, 550 sophomores, juniors and seniors quickly filled the allotted spots for the two-day program on Jan. 11–12 on the uptown campus. Students who are unable to participate in this year’s event should visit Tulane Career Services or the Freeman Career Management Center for advising.

MacLaren says the council plans to host Career Wave annually. Registration for next year’s event will open in the fall.

Katie Acuff, senior director of development at Newcomb-Tulane College, says that one of the council’s goals was to represent a variety of career fields.

“Several industries will be represented, but we have stressed that this is not a job fair. It’s not a time to come with your resume and interview,” says Acuff. “It’s a chance to learn how to prepare yourself for what you’ll need to enter the career world.”

Career Wave is being sponsored by Cory and Lisa Rapkin.
