Questions for Parents to Ask their Students During the First Semester

September

• How is living on campus or commuting?
• How are your instructors?
• Which instructors do you like or dislike at this point?
• Are you using a planner?
• If you are working, how flexible is it?
• What is the last day to drop a course without record?
• What is the last day to drop a course with a “W” as a grade?

October

• How did your mid-term exams go?
• Do you know how to figure your GPA in college?  If not, ask your advisor.
• What are your grades in each of your classes?
• If you don’t know exactly what your grade is in each course, what would be your grade in the worst case scenario?
• Have you talked to your instructors in their office hours or one-on-one?
• How much are you saying “No”?
• How are you adjusting with your roommate on campus?
• Have you been checking your Tulane e-mail every day?
• Are you making sure that you respond to any e-mail from instructors, advisors, etc.?
• Are you keeping up with finances?
• The Schedule of Classes for the Spring comes out this month, have you looked at the Schedule of Classes and made a tentative schedule?
• When will you meet with your advisor if you have not done so already?

• Are there any holds on your registration? (Check on Gibson)
• What are your grades in each of your classes before you leave for Thanksgiving? There is just about two weeks of class left after you return from Thanksgiving break.

December

• What classes have you registered to take next semester?
• When is your last final exam during the Exam Period?
• What all are you going to bring home that you don’t need to keep in your room?
